Homeopathy Treatment

What is Homeopathy?

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy (or homoeopathy) is a 200-year-old form of alternative medicine that claims to stimulate a healing response and strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself. Those who practice it claim that it is a holistic system of medicine based on the theory of treating ‘like with like’. It claims to stimulate the body’s own healing response to disease, using specially prepared, highly diluted preparations.

Homeopaths say they aim to treat the whole person, taking into account personality, lifestyle and hereditary factors, as well as the history of the disease. Since all people are unique, homeopathic medicines are prescribed to treat individuals.

The effectiveness of homeopathy is yet to be proven by medical science. There is no such thing as a homeopathic vaccine, and homeopathic medicines are not a replacement for conventional medical treatment of serious diseases or infections.

Homeopathy is a "treatment" based on the use of highly diluted substances, which practitioners claim can cause the body to heal itself.

It's based on a series of ideas developed in the 1790s by a German doctor called Samuel Hahnemann.

Does homeopathy work?

There's been extensive investigation of the effectiveness of homeopathy. There's no good-quality evidence that homeopathy is effective as a treatment for any health condition.

When is it used?

Homeopathy is used for an extremely wide range of health conditions. Many practitioners believe it can help with any condition.

Among the most common conditions that people seek homeopathic treatment for are:

  • Asthma
  • ear infections
  • hay fever
  • mental health conditions, such as depression, stress and anxiety
  • allergies, such as food allergies
  • dermatitis (an allergic skin condition)
  • arthritis
  • high blood pressure

Is homeopathy safe?

Homeopathic remedies are generally safe, and the risk of a serious adverse side effect arising from taking these remedies is thought to be small.

Some homeopathic remedies may contain substances that aren't safe or interfere with the action of other medicines.

You should talk to your GP before stopping any treatment prescribed by a doctor, or avoiding procedures such as vaccination, in favour of homeopathy.

Principles of Homeopathy

There are three main principles behind the practice of homeopathic medicine.

  • The law of similars: The law of similars refers to the "like cures like" theory noted above.
  • The principle of the single remedy: This principle holds that a single remedy should cover the physical, emotional, and mental symptoms of an illness combined.
  • The principle of the minimum dose: Only a small amount of substance is first used in a few doses, followed by an infinitesimal amount over time.

Homeopathy History

Homeopathy was developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, in 1807. He treated himself with a small amount of tree bark (cinchona bark) containing quinine, which is used to treat malaria. When he developed the symptoms of malaria, he came up with his law of "like cures like;" believing that drugs that cause specific symptoms can be used to cure the illnesses that cause those symptoms.

Homeopathy Degree Eligibility Criteria

Courses in Homeopathy are offered both at bachelor and masters levels. A candidate who has 10+2 science with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English can pursue the bachelor course i.e. BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery), which is five and half years long. Admission is made on the basis of entrance tests conducted both at state and national levels. Some private medical colleges conduct their own entrance examinations and also admit students according to merit.

One can also undertake a diploma course which is four years long. The MD Homeopathy degree course is three years long, which can only be pursued after completing the BHMS course and also qualifying the all India entrance examination.

Homeopathy Salary?

The salary of a homeopathic doctor appointed in a government hospital/department varies between Rs.10,000 – Rs.15, 000. In private practice the earnings are better and depends entirely on input. Private sector hospitals and nursing homes offer lucrative openings with excellent pay-packages.
